University Extension in Shenzhen
The socio-economic development of the Pearl River Delta Region (PRD Region) has been very remarkable in recent years. Therefore, CUHK has been actively pursuing collaborative as well as independent programmes and gaining a foothold in the economically robust PRD Region for the strategic development of the University.
Research Activities in Mainland China
Since the late 1970’s, taking the advantage of close proximity between Shatin and Shenzhen, CUHK, as the earliest among all institutions in Hong Kong, has been partnering with Mainland institutions in research projects and in offering joint programmes. Shenzhen Campus Initiative
In order to strengthen the research and educational involvement in Mainland China, there were preliminary suggestions for CUHK to establish a second campus in Shenzhen. On February 6, 2010, CUHK signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Shenzhen Municipal Government in which the two parties declared their intent to enhance collaboration in education by establishing a CUHK campus in Shenzhen.
CUHK’s Social Responsibility: a Top International Institution
With the vision of nurturing future researchers, managers and professionals for Shenzhen, the PRD Region and China as a whole, establishment of Shenzhen Campus and Research Institution is needed to provide first-class international educational opportunity to students in PRD Region. This vision is in alignment of CUHK's aspiration 'to combine tradition with modernity and to bring together China and the West'. More importantly, with the mission to spread our educational ideal and moral values to new generations of Chinese students and thus help in shaping the China’s future, Shenzhen Campus will provide a perfect platform for nurturing these students with our core values and ethical standards. CUHK is a comprehensive research university with first-class research facilities and professional talent. Further collaboration in education will strengthen Hong Kong and Shenzhen’s complementary advantages.
Catering for the Development Needs of Hong Kong and Shenzhen
Despite of the rapid development of the PRD region, in comparison with the Yangtze River Delta Region and the Bohai Bay region, the development of education and research institutions in Guangdong and Shenzhen is lagging behind. The unbalanced distribution in education of research institution relative to the regional economies provides valuable opportunities for universities in Hong Kong. Hence, further university extension in Shenzhen will support the development of human capital and innovative technology in the PRD region, especially in terms of exchanges of technology and talent. This in turn will help both Hong Kong and Shenzhen to diversify their economies and become more competitive.
Tapping Wider Educational and Research Resources
As a leading institution in Hong Kong, CUHK must tap into resources outside Hong Kong to scale up the research for achieving its aspiration of excellence. A new Shenzhen Campus and Research Institution will help the University to tap educational and research resources from the national and local government as well as industries in PRD region. These funding opportunities can contribute to the build of hardware-oriented disciplines and enhance our academic and research level. Besides, the rapid development of manufacturing industries in PRD region will also provide ample opportunities for CUHK’s R&D’s initiatives, employment and internship for our students in both Shenzhen and Shatin. It will reinforce Hong Kong’s role as an international metropolis and bring long-term benefits to CUHK.
The University will continue to study the feasibility of the second campus (in Shenzhen) and negotiate with the Shenzhen Municipal Government in light of a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding signed with the aforementioned government as authorized by the CUHK Council.
CUHK staff, students and alumni will be updated on progress from time to time through this webpage. Your participation is essential to the success of this initiative.
